How Technology Has

Changed Relationships

By: Bryn Wall

I’ve been in a relationship for a little over four years. I started dating my boyfriend at the end of high school and we’ve dated all throughout college. I’ve said this over and over to my friends, and as ridiculous as it may sound, being in a relationship in college is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. With all the stresses college puts on individuals, technology has only added more pressure onto my relationship.

For starters, millennials constantly have some form of technology in our hands and are focused in on the digital world. We, as a generation, are so obsessed with what’s going on online that we don’t care to look up and engage with one another face-to-face. Both my boyfriend and I are guilty of this (me more so than him, but I would never admit that to him – LOL) and it has definitely caused conflict between us on multiple occasions. For example, we’ll go out to dinner together and I’ll just be casually scrolling through my social media feeds out of habit. He’ll get upset with me because he wants us to have a meal and enjoy our time together without my face being locked on my cell phone’s screen. I can honestly say, after making that mistake a handful of times, I’ve realized how valuable it is to just put my phone down and simply live in the moment.

Another huge issue technology has created within relationships is the two – widely different, yet both problematic – perspectives of what a relationship looks like for people our age. One viewpoint displays what a ‘perfect’ relationship is. This essentially makes women (and men) think their significant other has to do certain things, say certain things and act a certain way in order to be a good partner. Of course every individual wants and deserves to be treated well by their boyfriend or girlfriends, but the things we see online has convinced our generation that a healthy, happy relationship has to look a specific way. The other viewpoint displays an ongoing trend of not being committed, loyal, respectful, etc. of their partner. I don’t know how or when this became popular, but it’s ruining the idea of love for millennials. Since when did ‘talking’ or Instagram compliments become an ideal image of what love is? Our generation thinks it’s ‘cool’ to not commit to just one person. We think it’s ‘cool’ to disrespect the ones we care about. So, when someone says we’re attractive on social media or gives us some form of a relationship, we become gratified by it. This hasn’t directly effected me and my boyfriend’s relationship; however, we have felt the pressure of others disrespecting our relationship by attempting to create disloyalty. This is a mixed result of the ‘no commitment, no loyalty’ trend we see on social media, as well as using social media as a relationship-building tool.

Technology as a whole has created pressure for millennials that no other generation has experienced before. There is a new level of temptation and expectation that has caused the idea of a relationship to evolve in a not-so-great manner. The good news is we can change this! So, the next time you’re spending time with your special someone, put the phone (or whatever technology you constantly use) down and just hang out with one another.

Technology at Weddings:

By: Leslie Halford

Brides dream of walking down the aisle for years. When walking down the aisle, brides expect to see the faces of their closest family and friends as they walk to meet their groom. In reality, this won’t happen. With technology addiction at its peak, the bride will most likely see the faces of her family and friends being blocked by their phones as they try to snap a pic of her. So how are the happy couples taking on this technology war?

Some brides and grooms are fighting the phones head-on, making their ceremony a technology-free zone and encouraging guest to leave their phones behind. Others are embracing the technology and encouraging guests to take pictures, post them, and use a wedding hashtag, like #JonesWedding or #Mr.&Mrs.Jones.

In my opinion, taking pictures is the photographer’s job and guests should just enjoy the party. When I think about my wedding, as an already shy person, I don’t feel comfortable in big groups or being the center of attention. I want to just be around the people I love and enjoy the evening. I want the people at my wedding to make a presence, and not be caught up in social media or their phones. Phone zombies don’t get invited! I want everyone dancing and celebrating, not checking on how many ‘Likes’ they’re getting on the weddings pics they snapped. When I look back on my wedding day, I want to have memories with the friends and family I love, that is what is most important. Enjoy the moment for what it is.

It honestly reminds me of the people I see at concerts. They are in the front row and filming the concert the whole time, watching the show through the camera lens. When you focus too much on capturing the moment, you end up missing the whole experience. If you are invited to a wedding, and the couple is paying for you to be there, by-golly you better be there and engaging with the real people around you, not virtual friends on Facebook! Final Verdict: Anti-Technology at Weddings.

Life Without a Cell Phone:

A Millennial’s Perspective

By: Bryn Wall

So… long story short, my cell phone randomly broke recently, and it took two weeks for the Simply Mac store here in Lubbock to get me a new one. Being the impatient young adult that I am, it wasn’t exactly a walk in the park to be phoneless for that amount of time. Now that I have finally gotten over the frustration of being out of the loop for so long (I’m being a little dramatic, ok?), I’ve come to realize a couple things.

For those of you who don’t know, I’m from Frisco, TX, and as of late 2016, Frisco is THE fastest growing city in the U.S. In other words, I come from a competitive area where supply and demand is pretty close to perfect. When I was frustrated about not having a new phone in my hand the second mine broke, I found myself comparing Lubbock to Frisco. I’m so used to having the resources to immediately solve my first world problems, that it was hard for me to understand Lubbock just simply isn’t there yet. Millennials (like myself) have become impatient and demanding, and as a young individual in this day and age, it’s important to understand that not everywhere, everyone, and everything is “there” yet.

Another thing I learned is how much millennials truly rely on their cell phones. When I told Kirk, the owner of EMW, that my phone was broken, he freaked out and said, “I would literally die if I didn’t have my cell phone” (he’s a little dramatic, too). But, seriously, the entire time I didn’t have a phone I couldn’t help but think: “How the heck did people do ANYTHING before cell phones existed?”

We (millennials) expect to be connected to everyone and everything at all times. For those two weeks, I couldn’t call or text anyone, and it made it so difficult to make plans or do anything. We’re used to having cell phones to communicate with one another that we forget to communicate and connect with the people right in front of us.

Although it was just two weeks, it felt like a lifetime. No, I’m totally kidding. In all seriousness, though, not having a cell phone for a brief period of time did open my eyes a little. If we continue to be consumed in the world of cell phones and online relationships, our real-life relationships will suffer. I think it’s important, now more than ever, for millennials to put down our cell phones, take a big step back and become more focused on our surroundings.

By: Molly Batura

Hi loves, happy Monday! Sorry I’m a few days late, but I was in Austin being a full adult (college students are essentially half-adults). Things were crazy in the office this past week and I feel as though I have so much to tell you, but not enough pages. How about the short version then?

Last week was a little hectic being the end of the month and all. What does that exactly mean for social teams? Planning!! Ah my OCD mind loves this stage. I’m talking about editorial calendars, color-coded to-do lists, blog outlines, client communication and the feeling when you get it all done. If you’re a little confused on these things, here’s a quick overview:

  • An editorial calendar maps out my social accounts’ months into what content I’ll be creating and posting, when I’ll post, and what medium I’ll be posting through. Very exciting and it’s all based on research (engagement, audience demographics, successes, etc.) I conduct each week!
  • Color-coded to-do lists…I like my colors, it helps me visualize things easily.
  • My blog outlines are my saving grace! With over 20 blogs each month, it helps to assign the topics discussed all at once. That way, when it comes to the writing week, I’ve already crossed the brainstorming step.

So I spent Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday planning each of these things for several clients at a time. I really enjoy this aspect of it, even if it may sound a little boring or crazy (depending how much you love organization). It’s a great thing for me to look forward to the next month and see how I can reach more people, make the company stand out, or portray who they are in a unique way.

Now I get to move from planning to scheduling! Don’t worry, I’ll tell you all about it at the end of the week.

Stay awesome,

MB

Hi loves!! We are back, back, back again…

If you missed my previous post, I went over my favorite ways to really relax and rewind. If you agreed or had new or different ideas, I’d love to hear some of your favorite ways to continue relaxing throughout the rest of the term!

Spring break was awesome but oh my goodness, did we miss this office and these people! This week has been crazy as we all get back into the swings of things regarding work, school, and the fact that sleep as we know it, is gone.

I think coming back to a job you love, after a vacation, makes the transition much easier. Call me out if it’s not, I’d love to hear otherwise (although, I think I’m right). Was I really on a break though? If we’re being honest, I checked my email and analytics at least once a day. Can’t stop, won’t stop, you know?

Once I came back, though, I found that a lot had changed in just seven days…not in a bad way, don’t worry! EMW is growing so rapidly, that we are picking up speed with no signs of stopping! With new clients, new ideas, and new ways to grab people’s attention, we’re a force to be reckoned with. Maybe that’s a big statement to make, but I know we can handle it.

I for one, have been working on blogging for our clients. Blogging sometimes gets overlooked simply because it can be time-consuming, but it is so beneficial! Blogging opens up a company to their clients/customers in a way social media simply can’t. If you’re wondering what I mean, let me explain it real quickly:

Social media sites are a great way to reach your target audience. They provide a quick insight into your good/service, benefits of choosing you over your competitors, and it’s by far the easiest way to keep up with you.

Blogging, however, humanizes your company. It gives you the deep conversational aspect and allows you to introduce your culture, further explain your good/service, and more! One of the many benefits of blogging is the lack of barrier. While you want to have a general idea of your blog’s theme, you have the freedom to constantly add new topics or segments, allowing your audience to see who you are rather than just what you do.

Make sense? That’s been my project this week – coming up with blog topics, schedules, and seeing how I can impact our target audience’s just a little bit more.

If you have questions about blogging or have something you want to see, feel free to reach out to me!

Stay awesome,

MB

Coffee + Channels 3

By: Molly Batura

Is it already my third week with you?! How lovely! Getting to share my life with you guys has become one of my favorite weekly to-dos!

So what’s up this week? Well…spring break is in a few days so it seems as though the days are moving a bit slower than usual. At the same time, I’m still shocked its Thursday. That being said, if anyone figures out what’s going on with my sense of time, you know where to find me!

Like I said, spring break is upon us!! I can practically smell the week full of freedom! No homework, no classes, no work (because I jumpstarted, heck yeah!), and no all-nighters full of studying. I adore learning, I always have; but it’s time for a small break to really focus on myself.

That being said, here are my top 10 ways to relax, rewind, and remember your awesomeness this next week:

  1. Start with the basics, and breathe!!

I don’t always have a second to enjoy time just sitting…I mean, no phone, no timer to know when 3.8 minutes have passed because you’re on a tight schedule, no book, nothing. Just sit and breathe! You’ll be surprised how relaxing it is!

  1. Go to the gym!!

Endorphins make you happy, and happy people don’t kill their classmates, colleagues, coworkers, fill in the blank (thank you, Legally Blonde for the best advice).

  1. Crack open a book!

If you know me, you know I usually carry a book around with me. I prefer reading to Netflix (blasphemous?), mostly because there’s something about curling up in a cozy blanket with a cup of coffee, and reading stories that take you on adventures, fall in love, or give you a new perspective.

  1. Fresh flowers, everywhere!
  2. Eat the thing you’re not supposed to, because you’re on the diet you hate. Just have one cheat meal, just one. Life is all about balance!
  3. Surround yourself with people who make you laugh!

I mean the stomach-hurts-from-laughing kind of people. Life is too short to be serious all the time, and the old saying “laughter is the best medicine” is true more than ever!

  1. Explore!!

This one is a little difficult since we live in Lubbock, but take a road trip somewhere new – a new coffee shop, a new hiking spot, a festival, whatever you fancy, find it and live it!

  1. Make yourself some coffee!

Okay, okay, I’m a little biased on this one since I’m a coffee addict…but, make a cup. Don’t buy one. There’s something peaceful and almost therapeutic about the smell of the brew.

  1. Remember who you are.

This one is so, so important! As a college student, I have several identifiers and several people telling me who I should be and what I should do. They mean well, but I know best who I want to be. While it can be scary, I’m really trying to focus on what makes me authentic and surrounding myself with people who encourage it. (hint hint, this one will always be important)

  1. Don’t apologize for feeling an emotion!

I’m still learning this one, but it’ll relieve a lot of stress; while reminding you, after all, you’re human.

You best believe, I’ll be tackling most of these over the break! Especially exploring and laughter as I’ll be in the Grand Canyon with some of my favorite people! Be sure to check out our Instagram throughout next week for updates on the intern’s travels!!

Stay awesome,

MB

Alright, loves! Happy Thursday!! We’re almost towards the end of the week and you know what that means…we get to breathe for a hot sec! Praise the Lord, I need a quick break.

Here we are, week 2 of Coffee + Channels, so thanks for taking time out of your crazy schedule to read about mine. I mentioned last week that some are skeptical about what I actually do at work. Their faces usually contort when I say “I manage social media”. I think their first assumption is that I’m either too lazy for a “real” job or I’m stupid. Yeah…hi…neither are true!

Managing social media is FAR more than simply scheduling posts. While that is an aspect of it (and an important one at that), there is a lot more going into what qualifies as good social media. Let’s go through quick play by play of what I do at work:

I always start with data and research…always! Every week, I start off by collecting statistics on previous week’s posts. This means I’m looking at both successful and failed posts on multiple levels: time of day, quality of wording, attached media, and of course, likes, shares, and comments. That’s a lot to look into!

So no, I don’t just refresh Facebook and Twitter all day. But if you still don’t believe me, after I do research I begin creating content – this, this is the fun part! I get to take my client’s goals and culture and turn them into a tangible item! Whether it’s through words, images, or videos, I get to figure out which way is best to convey the client (Hint hint: this is why I went into PR).

So I’m not lazy and I have a real job. My job just allows me to be creative and to think outside of the box (at all times) for the betterment of someone else!! (Remember that we’re all good at different things and we all bring value to the people around us in one or another, so don’t put someone down for their job or their passions.)

One of the great things about this office, and the people in it, is their love for everyone, their constant encouragement of each other, and their openness to new ideas. That’s rare and if you haven’t surrounded yourself with these kind of people, get on it! I promise you, it’ll make all the difference!

Stay awesome,

MB

Hey, loves! I’m so excited to start Coffee + Channels each week with you guys! My name’s Molly and I’m currently one of the interns at EMW (bless up). My identifier is easily an iced coffee in hand at all times and my main work is scheduling, monitoring, and analyzing social media channels (hence the name!) Each week, I’ll be here to update you on EMW life through the intern’s eyes, because let’s be real, this job is legit!

A quick, little background on myself: I’m a senior at Texas Tech and was fortunate enough to be hired last fall as a social media manager. Throughout the office, I’m pretty much a walking dictionary…we wouldn’t go too far as to say a grammar nazi, but I know my stuff!

I run social media for 4 awesome clients, but what does that mean? Glad you asked! I’m constantly creating and scheduling content (posts) for Facebook and Twitter. Now don’t worry, I don’t just sit here scrolling through Facebook (although, some people would like to think I do…another story). I get to conduct research and collect data based on target audiences, successful wording, and levels of interaction! Pretty stinking cool if you ask me!

Real talk though – what in the world is good about being an intern? I’ll be honest, being an intern sucks…if you work anywhere else! I’m not kidding you, EMW allows the interns to bring value to the company, not just coffee and tea. It’s here that I’ve been able to really put my skills to practice and I could not be more thankful for this opportunity!

Plus, the office is hella chill! We’re creative people, so naturally we’re in a creative space! Edison bulbs, couches, music constantly playing, and the greatest people you will ever meet make going to work something to look forward to! So check back each week, because I can’t wait to share this part of my life with you guys!

Stay awesome,

Law of A(ttra)CTION –

A True Game Changer

By: Kirk Noles

rat race imageSooooo… I may or may not have missed the last month, or two, of my ‘Thoughts From the Owner’ blog, but I have good reason. By reason I mean excuse, and by excuse I mean I should have done it!

The title of this blog, Law of Attraction – with the emphasis on ACTION, is something I highly believe in and have implemented in my business over the last 6 months.

Taking a step back and looking over the last half year at EMW, we have gone through some drastic changes. Most of these changes heavily reside on my shoulders. I really had to take a step back and re-evaluate who we were as a business, who I was as a leader, and the culture I was creating at my company.

I quickly realized that I spent an entire year trying to be, and create a business that was, something totally out of my character and outside of the direction that I truly wanted to head, in my life and for my company. I was wearing a freakin’ suit everyday for crying out loud!

I made one of the worst mistakes you can make in business, and in life for that matter, and started looking around me to see what other people and businesses were doing. DON’T DO THAT! I was more concerned with keeping up with the “competition” than I was doing what I had set out to do, and more importantly, doing what I loved.

I came to a crossroads about half-way through last year. I had created a good job… that I wasn’t happy or passionate about. I had to make a change.

Gamechanger

6 months to 6 figuresIn August of last year, I read “6 Months to 6 Figures” by Peter Voogd, and it was a complete game changer. Peter completely shifted my perspective on everything I thought I new about myself and my business. I wasn’t living the life I set out to create for myself. I wasn’t passionate anymore. I had become complacent and satisfied with where I was at in life.

Over the next few weeks I started taking strategic action, and implementing the practices outlined by Peter in his book. I started digging into everything I could get my hands on that Peter had put out, and even reached out to Peter personally.

Starting September 1st of 2016, I joined Peter’s Gamechanger Academy, and took on Peter as a personal business coach and mentor. I learned that day that investing in myself was the best investment I could make!

Implementing a course of action, and a true vision that was congruent with my goals was paramount. I learned that before I could ever develop a culture in my business that was in line with my vision, I had to be completely and brutally honest with myself. That definitely meant making some hard decisions, decisions that were more than uncomfortable. One thing I have learned in this process is to become comfortable being uncomfortable, and to quit pleasing people. If you know me, you know that was like having open heart surgery.

I ditched the suits, I lost and parted ways with clients, employees, and some friends. At the end of the day it was the best decision I have ever made.

Action and Results

Needless to say, the past 6 months have been, by far, the best 6 months that my company has ever had. December and January have been the best months my business has ever had. The employees and interns are the best crew that has ever worked here, and they are all visionaries and future leaders who understand the vision and culture of this company. I have personally been more productive, passionate, and fulfilled with my company than I have ever been. Once I became truly honest with myself, implemented a clear vision, and took strategic and massive action toward that vision, amazing things started to happen. Funny how that works.

In my opinion, the Law of Attraction really works. But it only works if it is followed by the Law of Action. Laying out a clear vision and game plan is a great starting point. Taking massive action toward that goal is where the sweet spot truly is!

So, as you can see, we have been a little busy for the last few months. So there’s my excuse for not having a blog done!

Reinventing Animal Shelters

Awareness can keep a local animal shelter alive. In today’s world, getting attention is far more difficult if you can’t keep up with trends. Right now that trend is going online, something shelters can’t keep up with.

It is far too easy for shelters to be low on funds and overflowing with animals. This leaves little room in the budget for web design or to pay for an online digital marketing agency.

Now imagine a perfect world where shelters have more funding. Picture a campaign that can boost search engine optimization and save animal lives, all while taking a large burden off animal shelters. But how you ask? Online! Through online resources, like social media, shelters can spread a message that makes pet owners more responsible and reduces strays. One thing shelters should not do is be afraid to ask or reach out to web designers. It never hurts to ask, and you’d be surprised as to how many places take a lower rate for good causes. No harm will come from presenting a budget to a digital agency and seeing what they can do for you.

Animal videos are getting shared like crazy on platforms like Facebook. If shelters could create similar videos that have an underlining message to leash, spay/neuter, and microchip their animals they could boost the buzz around their shelter and spread a message that makes pet owners more responsible while drawing more people from social media to their website.

Media in any form is incredibly influential for pet owners in both good and bad ways. With the help of social media, lost pets can be returned to owners in record time. Shelters can share images of their adoptable animals and triple the number of potential adopters that see’s that animal. Media also has the power to spread breed stereotypes, evident in the case of the pit bull, a kind-hearted breed assumed dangerous due to bad training and owner mistreatment. Also, consider Finding Nemo or 101 Dalmatians. After Finding Nemo came out, there was a huge demand for clownfish. Likewise with 101 Dalmatians. After the film, there was a skyrocket of Dalmatian sales and a short time later shelters were overrun with abandoned Dalmatians. So the question is, can shelters do the same? Can they spread awareness and create a demand for rescue animals using digital marketing and social media? I think the answer is yes, and that it is something that needs to take a higher priority!

Last December an Atlanta animal shelter, Furkids, made a low budget commercial where they tried selling their animals in a commercial what imitated a bad used car commercial. The humorous video took about 30 minutes to film and now has 4,869,426 views on Youtube! It just goes to show, if you put something online you have a huge audience that can hear your message, and that is untapped potential for animal shelters to completely change how we view our animal companions. My recommendation? Having more shelters bring on unpaid college student interns majoring in electronic media communication, public relations, and advertising to help them go online, boost SEO and web traffic.
